Every year on 29 August, the world observes the International Day against Nuclear Tests, a day dedicated to remembering the devastating humanitarian and environmental consequences of nuclear weapons testing and renewing international efforts to end nuclear explosions.
Since the first nuclear test was conducted on 16 July 1945 in New Mexico, more than 2,000 nuclear tests have been carried out around the world. These tests left lasting consequences for communities, ecosystems, public health, and future generations.
The International Day against Nuclear Tests is therefore more than a date on the international calendar. It is an opportunity to ask an important question:
What have we learned from decades of nuclear testing, and what must the international community do to ensure that nuclear explosions never happen again?
Why 29 August?
On 2 December 2009, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted Resolution 64/35, declaring 29 August as the International Day against Nuclear Tests.
The date was proposed by Kazakhstan to commemorate the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site on 29 August 1991. The Soviet Union conducted hundreds of nuclear tests at the site, exposing surrounding communities to radioactive contamination and leaving a lasting humanitarian legacy.
The first International Day against Nuclear Tests was observed in 2010. Since then, governments, international organizations, civil society, academics, youth groups and other stakeholders have used the day to promote awareness, education, advocacy, dialogue and action toward ending nuclear testing.
The Human Cost of Nuclear Testing
Nuclear testing is not simply a scientific or military experiment. Nuclear explosions can produce immediate and long-term consequences, including blast and thermal effects, radiation exposure, radioactive fallout, environmental contamination and impacts on communities living near test sites and downwind areas.
The history of nuclear testing demonstrates that the consequences can extend far beyond the location where an explosion occurs. Communities affected by testing have continued to raise concerns about health, environmental degradation, displacement, and the intergenerational consequences of radioactive exposure.
This is why remembering nuclear tests is also about remembering the people and communities who experienced their consequences.
The United Nations emphasizes that the suffering of victims and survivors of nuclear testing is not merely history; it is a warning about the consequences of future nuclear explosions.
From More Than 2,000 Tests to a Global Norm Against Testing
The history of nuclear testing is extensive.
Between 1945 and 1996, more than 2,000 nuclear tests were conducted. The United States conducted more than 1,000 tests, the Soviet Union more than 700, while France, the United Kingdom, China and others also conducted nuclear tests.
The international community gradually developed stronger legal and political mechanisms to restrict nuclear testing.
The 1963 Partial Test Ban Treaty prohibited nuclear tests in the atmosphere, outer space and underwater, although underground testing continued.
A major milestone came in 1996, when the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) was opened for signature. The CTBT prohibits all nuclear weapon test explosions and other nuclear explosions, regardless of whether they occur underground, underwater, in the atmosphere or in outer space.
Since the CTBT opened for signature, only 10 nuclear tests have been conducted, compared with more than 2,000 during the preceding five decades. This demonstrates the strength of the international norm against nuclear testing, even though the Treaty has not yet entered into force.
2026: Thirty Years of the CTBT
The year 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the opening for signature of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.
It is also 35 years since the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.
These anniversaries provide an important opportunity to reflect on how far the international community has come—and how much work remains.
In July 2026, Tonga became the 179th State to ratify the CTBT, bringing the Treaty to 188 signatories and 179 ratifications. However, the CTBT still requires ratification by all 44 States listed in its Annex 2 before it can enter into force; nine of those ratifications remain outstanding.
The continued progress toward universal adherence demonstrates broad international support for ending nuclear testing, but it also highlights the need for sustained political commitment.
How Do We Know if a Nuclear Test Has Occurred?
One of the most important developments since the CTBT was negotiated is the advancement of technologies used to detect nuclear explosions.
The CTBTO’s International Monitoring System (IMS) uses four primary technologies:
- Seismic monitoring to detect underground explosions and earthquakes;
- Hydroacoustic monitoring to detect explosions underwater;
- Infrasound monitoring to detect very low-frequency sound waves in the atmosphere; and
- Radionuclide monitoring to detect radioactive particles and noble gases.
When complete, the system is designed to include 337 monitoring facilities around the world. As of July 2026, the CTBTO reported that 307 certified facilities were operating.
These technologies are important not only for nuclear-test monitoring but also for broader scientific and humanitarian applications, including earthquake monitoring, tsunami warning and environmental research.
Why the CTBT Matters
The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty is important because preventing nuclear explosions can constrain the development and qualitative improvement of nuclear weapons.
A comprehensive prohibition on nuclear testing strengthens both nuclear disarmament and nuclear non-proliferationefforts.
It also reinforces an international expectation that nuclear weapons should not be tested.
As the United Nations has emphasized, ending nuclear testing is an important step toward the broader goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.
The CTBT therefore represents more than a treaty. It represents a global commitment to move away from nuclear explosions as an instrument of military competition.
What Can Africa Learn From the Nuclear Testing Legacy?
The consequences of nuclear testing are particularly relevant to discussions about global security, humanitarian protection, environmental security and nuclear governance in Africa.
Africa has a strong history of supporting nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. The African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, commonly known as the Pelindaba Treaty, reflects the continent’s commitment to preventing the development, acquisition, testing and stationing of nuclear weapons in Africa.
For African youth, researchers, policymakers and civil society organizations, International Day against Nuclear Tests provides an opportunity to strengthen understanding of:
- nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation;
- nuclear security and safety;
- humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons;
- environmental consequences of nuclear testing;
- nuclear verification and monitoring;
- nuclear-weapon-free zones;
- international law and nuclear governance; and
- the role of youth and civil society in peace and security.
These conversations are especially important as Africa continues to develop expertise in peaceful nuclear science and technology.
Promoting peaceful uses of nuclear technology and preventing nuclear weapons proliferation are not contradictory goals. They require strong governance, responsible institutions, effective safeguards, safety and security measures, and informed public participation.
5 Things to Remember About Nuclear Testing
1. Nuclear testing began in 1945
The first nuclear explosion, known as the Trinity test, took place on 16 July 1945 in New Mexico, marking the beginning of the nuclear testing era. More than 2,000 nuclear tests followed over the subsequent decades.
2. Testing has consequences beyond the test site
Radioactive fallout can travel beyond the immediate testing area, affecting communities and environments far from the location of an explosion. The legacy of nuclear testing therefore extends across generations.
3. The CTBT created a powerful global norm
Although the CTBT has not entered into force, it has helped establish a strong international norm against nuclear testing. Only 10 nuclear tests have occurred since the Treaty opened for signature in 1996.
4. Verification is central to the nuclear test ban
The CTBTO’s International Monitoring System provides scientific capabilities for detecting possible nuclear explosions around the world. This makes verification a central part of building confidence in the global nuclear-test-ban regime.
5. Ending nuclear testing requires collective action
Governments have a central role, but they are not alone. Scientists, educators, young people, civil society organizations, researchers, journalists and communities affected by nuclear testing all have roles to play in maintaining awareness and advocating for a world without nuclear explosions.
From Remembrance to Action
International days are meaningful when they lead to action.
For organizations, universities, schools and youth networks, 29 August can be an opportunity to organize:
- educational webinars on nuclear testing;
- discussions on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation;
- youth dialogues on global security;
- awareness campaigns;
- policy discussions;
- academic seminars;
- social media campaigns;
- exhibitions on the history and consequences of nuclear testing; and
- conversations about Africa’s role in global nuclear governance.
The goal should not simply be to remember the past, but to ensure that its lessons inform the decisions of today.
A Future Without Nuclear Tests
Thirty years after the CTBT opened for signature, the international community has demonstrated that a strong norm against nuclear testing is possible. Yet the Treaty remains outside full legal force.
The challenge before the international community is therefore clear: preserve the existing norm, strengthen verification, advance universal adherence, and bring the CTBT into force.
The United Nations Secretary-General’s 2026 message emphasizes the urgency of this task, calling on nuclear-weapon States to maintain existing moratoria and act to bring the CTBT into force.
The International Day against Nuclear Tests reminds us that nuclear testing is not simply a chapter in military history. It is a story of communities, environmental consequences, scientific advancement, international diplomacy and the continuing struggle to prevent future nuclear explosions.
As we commemorate 29 August 2026, let us remember the victims and survivors, recognize the progress made, educate the next generation, and strengthen the international commitment to zero nuclear tests.
The lesson of nuclear testing is not that we need better ways to test nuclear weapons. The lesson is that humanity must work toward a future in which nuclear explosions are never conducted again.
