A generation ago, children spent most of their free time playing outside, reading books, or gathering with friends in their neighborhoods. Today, many of those same moments happen online. Children use the internet to learn, communicate, explore new ideas, and express their creativity. The digital world has become an extension of their classrooms, playgrounds, and communities.
But just as we work to keep children safe in our homes, schools, and public spaces, we must also protect them in the digital spaces they now call home.
The internet offers incredible opportunities. It can connect a child in a rural village to educational resources, inspire a young innovator to build new skills, or give a teenager a platform to share ideas with the world. Yet alongside these opportunities are real risks cyber-bullying, online exploitation, exposure to harmful content, privacy violations, and digital scams that many children are not equipped to recognize.
This is why the African Union’s Child Online Safety and Empowerment Policy is such an important milestone. It reflects a growing understanding that children’s rights do not end when they log onto the internet. Every child deserves to be protected, respected, and empowered in the digital world.
The policy promotes several key priorities:
- Protecting children’s privacy and personal data online.
- Safeguarding children from abuse, exploitation, cyber-bullying, and harmful content.
- Creating opportunities for children to participate safely and meaningfully in digital spaces.
- Promoting digital literacy so that children, parents, teachers, and communities understand how to use technology responsibly and safely.
- Supporting African Union Member States in developing national strategies and programmes that strengthen child online safety.
Keeping children safe online is not a responsibility for governments alone. Parents, educators, technology companies, community leaders, and civil society all have a role to play. Open conversations at home, digital safety lessons in schools, stronger online protections, and responsible technology design can make a significant difference.
